I like books; this means I have large collections at my office, my home, my parents home, and at various strategic storage sites. For a few years now, I've been considering making a catalog of them all--if only to prevent me from buying the same book twice. To further my goal, I purchased software designed for collectors that instantly converts ISBN codes to a full description and picture of the book in question. But the iPhone app for collecting the ISBN codes from my books was not easy to use. So when Inateck asked me to review this scanner, I jumped at the chance--I did not pay for the scanner. I was able to perform scans from 25 to 30 feet away consistently while connected via Bluetooth to my Galaxy SII smartphone, even with a closed door in between. Scanning in "offline mode" also works very well, storing scans for later uploading which persist in the scanner's internal memory even after the unit is powered off (or until the memory buffer is cleared by scanning one of the appropriate codes in the user manual). Speaking of the user manual, it's the one sore spot in this package. Thankfully, the scanner performs superbly in spite of it, but the manual is vague, poorly translated, confusing, and contradictory in several places. It's not without its faults, however, but it has been performing very well for me. Setup is about as simple as it can be. The setup sequence is barcode driven, using barcodes provided in the user guide. All you need to do is go to the section for your operating system (e.g., XP, Win 7/8, Andriod, IOS) and follow the steps. The guide also includes barcodes for scanner functionality, such as keyboard language, offline mode (for when you're out of bluetooth range) and others. The downside, of course, is that it's a major problem should you lose the guide with the setup barcodes when you need to change something. Fortunately, Inateck has a copy of the guide as a PDF on their website. I've downloaded it and have it stored just in case. The scanner itself is lightweight. That's good for minimizing arm/hand strain, but not so good with regard to being bumped about.
